Hands-On Addition & Subtraction Activities for 2nd Grade

Ahhhh, addition and subtraction. We second grade teachers know these standards like the back of our hands, because we teach this unit for what feels like months upon months each year! I don’t know about you all, but I’m always looking for some fresh, new hands-on addition and subtraction activities for teaching this unit, because even after it’s over, we need to keep spiraling the work to keep our students’ skills fresh!

Today, I’m sharing a round up of some of my favorite addition and subtraction activities! If you’re looking to add to your resource collection this year, I have a variety of differentiated, hands-on, engaging, and rigorous activities for your classroom. Hands On Games and Task Cards

For both 2-digit and 3-digit addition, and 2-digit and 3-digit subtraction, I have sets of hands-on games and task cards that are PERFECT for centers or small group lessons! These are so handy to have prepped ahead of time, so you have grab-and-go activities for any part of your math block! Plus, they are very specifically targeting addition and subtraction skills, so they will help your students grow at the same time.

2-Digit Addition and Subtraction Activities

I have activity packs for both 2-digit addition and subtraction (sold separately, or bundled). These packs are themed, and give teachers access to whole group lesson, small group lessons, center activities, homework, and review all in one, big pack! The activities found in these packs are versatile, and can be used wherever you need to boost your instruction, or provide extra practice.

3-Digit Addition and Subtraction Activities

Similarly to the 2-digit packs, there are also 3-digit addition and subtraction activity packs that you can use to give your students that extra regrouping practice that they will need this year! These are great to print and prep all at once, so you know that your adding and subtracting units are fully-stock with engaging but rigorous activities for your students!

Addition and Subtraction Journal Prompts and Choice Board

I have these journal prompts for every math unit you can teach in 2nd grade. These journal prompts can be projected or printed and cut out for students to glue in math notebooks. They practice each of the Common Core Math Standards for the unit, ensuring that your students are writing about their thinking through every lesson you teach! Print and cut them out at the beginning of a new unit, and have them ready to go as a great warm-up at the beginning of each math block!

I also have choice boards for every 2nd grade domain! These choice boards make great early finisher activities, center work, or even could be sent home as homework during that teaching unit. The possibilities are endless, and the prep is super minimal!
