Place Value Activities for 2nd Grade

Place value is such a critical skill for our students to master. There’s a reason we spend so much time on it in 1st-2nd grade! So many other skills will come more easily to students who have a firm grasp on place value!

Today, I’m sharing a round up of some of my favorite place value activities! If you’re looking to add to your resource collection this year, I have a variety of differentiated, hands-on, engaging, and rigorous activities for your classroom. You can find each of these products in my TPT store.

Place Value Detectives

This activity pack is full of detective-themed place value activities! Your students will have a blast with these task cards, center activities, hands-on games that you can use in small groups or centers, crafts, and so much more! These are the perfect activities to use throughout your place value unit.

Place Value Donuts

This printable donut craft is a great review of number forms, and makes a fun bulletin board display. Students will decorate their donuts with place value ‘sprinkles’, and then write about the different forms of the number represented on their donut! This is a great end-of-unit review, and and adorable thing to put on display!

Place Value Journal Prompts & Choice Board

I have these journal prompts for every math unit you can teach in 2nd grade. These journal prompts can be projected or printed and cut out for students to glue in math notebooks. They practice each of the Common Core Math Standards for the unit, ensuring that your students are writing about their thinking through every lesson you teach! Print and cut them out at the beginning of a new unit, and have them ready to go as a great warm-up at the beginning of each math block!

I also have choice boards for every 2nd grade domain! These choice boards make great early finisher activities, center work, or even could be sent home as homework during that teaching unit. The possibilities are endless, and the prep is super minimal!

Place Value Scarecrows

Another great end-of-unit place value activity is the Place Value Scarecrows! Students will rotate through task cards to complete a graphic organizer all about different forms of numbers, and then use some of those numbers to build a scarecrow! These make an adorable display during the fall months!
