3 ways to save your SPRING!

3 ways incorporating projects can save your SPRING!

April always meant skill review in my classroom. April also meant finding ways to extend learning for the kids who had already mastered the skills we were reviewing.

I’m not going to lie…keeping the fast finishers engaged during my first years in the classroom was a big struggle! I felt like I had so many things on my plate already. It felt impossible to plan extra things for those advanced kids, in the midst of everything else! This only got worse as we moved later into the year.

That entire experience is the inspiration behind my Math PBLs. I didn’t want other teachers to wonder how to reach and engage every student in their classroom, so I designed something to help! I have 3 reasons why these math projects are perfect for springtime!

#1- Engagement Made Easy!

What do we need at the end of the year MORE than engagement? Math PBLs engage students in the work so deeply that you can get other things done while they are working! This is a hands-off learning experience that you can trust because the rigor is there!

Engaged students = focused students. Focused students = a calmer classroom! Pull your students into engaging projects like building a zoo, managing a sports team, running a donut shop and more!

#2: Print & Go Spiral Review

Every student needs to review at the end of the year, but not every assignment makes that easy. PBLs incorporate every math standard for 2nd grade, making them great spiral review! Forget pulling out old worksheets and digging in your files. So many of my math PBLs cover math skills for the entire year in second grade. You can assign one project and cover your full year‘s curriculum in one download! This is a great time of year to spiral review those standards and these projects will allow you to do that easily.

#3: Deepen Student Understanding!

Math PBLs get students to apply math to real-world situations. Budgeting, creating schedules, and tracking inventory are all pieces of many of the projects. These tasks help students understand the math they’ve been learning all year on a deeper level! Work through the PBL’s with your students or use for independent center time. PBL’s make a great tool to see where students may still need some guidance before moving onto third grade.
