End of the Year Math Projects
How is your end-of-year season going? I’m hoping you can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
I want to share one of my favorite end-of-year tips with you today: use projects at the end of the year in place of small groups and centers.
When you enter the last couple of weeks of the year, there is SO much to do to pack up your room and get students ready to leave. There are also dozens of schedule disruptions. It’s almost impossible to keep your small group and center routine going. Collaborative group projects are the perfect way to get your students working together, so you can create some flexibility in your routine. This gives you the freedom to start on that end-of-year checklist, and make it to all of the assemblies.
But the best part is that your students will still be learning and growing…all the way until the last day of school!
Here are some of my favorite project options for this time of year:
CREATE A BOARD GAME
Assign different pairs or small groups skills from the year, and let them build a game around it. Or, let the students pick their own skills! Such a great higher-order thinking activity. After all board games have been made, host a ‘board game day’ at school to let students try each other’s games! There are so many ways you can incorporate this fun Create a Board Game math project into your end of year curriculum! You’ll find 6 game board options, planning sheets, dice, card templates, and spinners plus so much more!
BUILD A TOWN MEASUREMENT PROJECT?
This is a collaborative class project, centered around reviewing your measurement standards! Each student will follow measurement directions to build one building in a town. At the end of the project, you have an entire town to put on display! You’ll receive direction sheets in units, centimeters, and inches when purchasing my Build a Town Measurement Project. Easily differentiate by mixing and matching measurements to add a challenge! Your hallway display will be sure to catch some compliments!
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MATH PROJECTS?
Spiral review many skills at once
Give students a hands-on, engaging learning experience
Deepen understanding of a skill
Get students working together, strengthening interpersonal skills
Keep students working hard, which minimizes behavior disruptions!
Projects are easy to start, stop, then start again. This is important when you need tons of flexibility with end-of-year schedules!
Your students will be having FUN, which is what the last weeks of school are all about. :)
